How Long Does Microblading Last? The Honest Answer for SA Clients

By Sam, Blade Boutique··7 min read

The most common question before a microblading appointment is not about pain or price. It is: how long will it last? The honest answer is one to three years — and that range is wide for a reason. Where you land in it depends almost entirely on factors you can control.

The average: what most clients experience

For most clients with normal to dry skin who follow aftercare correctly and protect their brows from the sun, microblading holds well for 18 to 24 months before a colour refresh is needed. Clients with oilier skin types or who spend significant time outdoors typically see noticeable fading at the 12 to 16 month mark.

This is not a flaw in the treatment. Microblading sits in the upper dermis — it is designed to fade gradually. Pigment that lasts forever is pigment that has gone too deep, which creates a different set of problems.

What makes microblading fade faster

The following factors shorten microblading longevity significantly:

  • Oily or combination skin: sebum production gradually pushes pigment out of the dermis. If your T-zone is active by midday, expect microblading to fade faster — and consider powder brows instead.
  • Sun exposure: UV is the single biggest pigment degrader. In South Africa, with one of the highest UV indices in the world, this matters more than anywhere else. SPF over healed brows is non-negotiable.
  • Retinol and AHA/BHA products: chemical exfoliants accelerate skin cell turnover, which means pigment moves out faster. Many clients who are surprised by quick fading are using active skincare products without realising the effect.
  • Swimming pools and saunas: chlorine and steam exposure both accelerate fading. This applies to the healing period especially, but also long-term.
  • Iron deficiency: commonly linked to quicker-than-average fading. If your microblading fades very fast across multiple sessions, a blood panel is worth discussing with your GP.
  • Very fair or very deep skin tones: microblading hair strokes can read differently depending on skin tone, and the depth at which pigment must be placed differs, which can affect retention.

UV is the biggest pigment degrader in South Africa. One of the highest UV indices in the world means SPF over your healed brows is not optional — it is maintenance.

A note on melanin-rich skin

South African clients with deeper skin tones sometimes experience slightly different healing and retention compared to lighter-skinned clients. Melanin-rich skin heals more robustly — which is a good thing — but it also means the skin can sometimes push pigment slightly during healing. In Sam's experience, the first perfection session is especially important for deeper skin tones, as it allows for precise adjustments once the initial heal is complete.

The touch-up schedule

How to structure your microblading appointments:

  • Perfection session (included): booked 4 to 6 weeks after the initial procedure. This is not a bonus — it is part of the treatment. It is where patches are filled, shape is refined, and the final result is locked in.
  • Colour refresh at 12 to 16 months: for most clients, this is when brows start looking softer and sparsely filled. A 60-minute refresh session restores the original result.
  • Annual refresh after that: once you are in the maintenance cycle, most clients come back once per year to keep brows looking sharp.

Signs it is time for a refresh

Brows look sparser than when they first healed. Colour has shifted to a cool or grey tone (common when pigment is near the end of its cycle). The hair strokes look soft rather than defined. If you are in doubt, send Sam a photo on WhatsApp — she will tell you honestly whether you need a touch-up or whether your brows are still performing well.

How to get maximum longevity

  • Apply SPF 30 or higher over healed brows when spending time outdoors.
  • Avoid retinol and AHA/BHA products directly over the brow area in your daily skincare routine.
  • Do not pick, rub, or scratch brows during the healing period — this is when most premature fading is caused.
  • Stay out of pools, saunas, and steam rooms for the first 4 weeks after treatment.
  • Book your perfection session at the correct time (4 to 6 weeks post-treatment, not earlier or later).
  • Come back for a colour refresh before the brows are completely faded — it is easier and cheaper to refresh maintained brows than to re-do them from scratch.
